Today is Juneenth, the anniversary (150th this year) of the day slaves in Texas were informed of the fact that they had been freed by the emancipation proclamation. This day essentially celebrates the end of slavery, making it as significant a holiday as the country’s Independence Day. Juneteenth should be recognized as a national holiday. Due respect for African-Americans demands it.
