As today marks beginning of the latest session of the Florida Legislature, a series of rallies have been planned around the state to bring attention to the need to reverse the restrictions on voting rights imposed by our Rogue Governor Rick Scott. In Gainesville, we (members of Gainesville Moveon.org) held our rally at the local (SW 76th Street and 24th Avenue) office our (due to gerrymandering) State Representative Rick Perry, a right-wing Republican who voted with Governor Scott 80% of the time. I was one of thirteen people I counted there, as was Alachua County DEC chairperson Jon Reiskind. We held signs and chanted slogans.
We demonstrated for an hour, from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. At one point we walked to Tower Road and back. At the end one of Rick Perry’s aides handed out bottled water. On the way out we saw two Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Cars parked nearby. Connie Amidei, the event’s organizer, remarked that the presence of law enforcement officers meant that we had a good rally. I hope that this is the start of a successful push for voting rights reform that includes the elimination of Governor Scott’s restrictions.
